Message Characteristics

This series of blogs are demonstrations of persuasion tactics used to change people’s attitudes or behavior. There are three types of methods of persuasion: fear-inducing messages, simple messages with distractions and complex two-sided messages.

Fear messages are designed to encourage people to engage in danger control, or do something rational in order to reduce or avoid danger by scaring the viewer. In order for fear messages to work, it has to meet certain criteria. Otherwise, the viewer will just rely on fear control, which is when a view does something to deal with the fact they are afraid: get drunk to forget about it, change the channel, deny it or stop thinking about it entirely. Four criteria must be met for the fear message to be effective: it must convey that there is a real risk for negative events in the viewers’ life and it’s very likely for said event to take place if they don’t adopt a behavior. Then the message has to show specific steps the viewers can easily follow to do the behavior. If the fear message includes these components, it will be very effective in changing people’s behavior.

The second message is quite simple, except it is bloated with distractions. The purpose of the distractions is to make people make decisions using peripheral route processing. When people use peripheral route processing, they do not think rationally and resort to quick snap decisions based on heuristics; when distracted, people will make decisions based on whether or not the communicator appears legitimate. The message also has to be simple though, because if any information is put across that enables the viewer to have a better understanding of the topic or is able to relate to it, it would stunt the snap decision making.

The third message is the two-sided message, which attempts to persuade people through the use of central-route processing. Central-route processing careful analysis of a message based on the logic of the information presented. Two-sided communications presents an opposing opinion in addition to the message conveyed and argues why the opposing view is wrong. This kind of message gives the viewer enough time and information to think about the message and make a rational decision.

More proof of weeds evil, evil ways

While us here, on this blog believe that smoking marijuana is distructive and harmful to the human body, other's are not so sure. When looking into the chemical aspect, and make-up of the marijuana plant.

People who are believe in the positive aspects of weed refer to the chemical THC. THC is a chemical that has been seen as beneficial to some illnesses.
Under the clinical point of view, Δ9-THC produces some therapeutic benefits like its effects on nausea/emesis due to cancer chemotherapy, as anappetite promoter, on some painful conditions and on symptoms of multiple sclerosis are clearly demonstrated.

On the other side it impairs the human capacity to discriminate time intervals and space distances, vigilance, memory and the performance for mental work, and also results in disconnected thoughts, panic reactions, disturbing changes in perception, delusions and hallucinatory experiences.

The long term effects on the psyche and cognition are not known as there are no reports of prolonged use of Δ9-THC. But this does not mean that it is ok to start smoking and then quit, you might aswell not begin to do it at all!

Celebrity opposes marijuanna use

HE DOESNT SMOKE POT AND NEITHER SHOULD YOU!

Celebrity actor Bernie Mac encourages others to not use marijuanna. When he was a kid, he was pressured into smoking by his peers.

Here is a segement of an article by cannibusculture.com about the movie actors in Oclean's eleven and their use of marijuanna:

"Bernie Mac, who plays Frank Catton, got turned against marijuana at young age. In his book, I Ain't Scared of You, Mac explains that he tried to pretend to be a pot smoker in high school, but that eventually his bluff was called and he had to toke up with his friend. He writes, "Man, they had me doing everything: shotgunning me, had me firing up shit. They gave me the joint with instructions. Joe: 'Okay, puff. Now, hold it. Hold it. Hold it. Hold it. Keep holdin' it. Hooooold it. Let it go. Nowtakeanotherone!'"Whooo! I was so blowed! And my chest, I could hear my heart racing. My heart was pumpin' so hard it was hurting. It felt like something was pulling my esophagus down. My eyes closed."Mac claims that he started running uncontrollably, sweating profusely, and that eventually his grandfather took him to the hospital. Doctors further scared Mac by suggesting that there had probably been "angel dust" in the joint."

Message from a Phd

DOCTOR KNOWS BEST! DONT SMOKE POT!

Dale Gieringer, a P.h.D and expert on marijuanna wrote many articles about his findings on marijuanna research, ranging from the debunking of various myths about the drug and urges to reform prohibition laws.

Dr. Gieringer explains that while marijuanna is not as dangerous as cigarettes or alchohol, there are dangers in taking the drug. Marijuanna contains virtually the same gases and tars as tobacco, so prolonged smoking of the drug can cause respitatory disease. Recent studies suggest that marijuanna is also a contributing factor to lung cancer, but there is not yet enough information to confirm this.

Marijuanna is also known to degrade short-term memory, concentration, judgment, and coordination at complex tasks. Thus, taking this drug increases the risk of getting into an accident, especially when the drug is taken in combination with other substances such as alchohol.
